Gareth Emmanuel Poe
Gareth Emmanuel Poe has spent his life growing up in the slightly less than salubrious city of Ashville. Other than being extremely physically strong, nothing marked him out as extraordinary until one night, a visitor arrived in his dreams. The entity that is the Trainer told Gareth he was to be trained as a 'hero', and since then life has gotten slightly more hectic than Gareth would have liked. While his waking self has no recollection of the training he receives in his dreams, he has still had to deal with the implications of what he has become, notably recently befriending a stranded alien by the name of Sanyiel. Gareth is a childhood friend of Anne Smith and, more recently, formed a strong, almost brother-like friendship with Jack Cooper. While introverted and quiet, he is fiercely loyal to both his friends and has often gone out of his way to help them. Gareth's father is a former reporter who now works as a high ranking diplomat for the government, while his mother is an air hostess, so his parents are rarely around, and Gareth lives alone in the family home on a generous allowance. Jack Alfred Cooper (Koops) Jack Cooper, known to his friends as 'Koops', is a geek and proud of it. Normally carefree and upbeat, his life has been made far from easy by the bullies of Ashville High and his occasional streak of black humor and cynicism is no doubt because of this. Incredibly intelligent and inventive, especially in chemistry, his father's field of expertise, he enjoys experimenting and creating a diversity of impressively lethal or humorous (or both) substances. Due to his father's position in Gencorp he is usually able to get his hands on everything from arsenic to zircon which has resulted in several rather amusing (or catastrophic, depending on your point of view) incidents in the past, giving him a reputation as somewhat of a dangerous individual among the teachers at ashville high, though this reputation is largely underserved. Jack has formed a fierce friendship with Gareth since he started attending ashville high and the two are now rarely seen without the other. Jack's mother works as a doctor at ashville hospital and, like his father, works long hours so, like Gareth, Jack has learnt to cope on his own far earlier than most boys. Go back to top
Anne Smith
Anne is Gareth's only other long term friend, though neither enjoys remembering the cirumstances of the formation of their friendship, far back in their childhoods. Since then they have remained together almost out of tradition, despite their different interests and motivations. Anne is passionate and motivated both physically and academically, driven to succeed in whatever she does. While normally tight lipped and fairly sullen, around her friends she opens a little and becomes less frigid, though her humor remains bitingly sarcastic. Anne's greatest passion is martial arts and she holds multiple blackbelts in various different styles. Her prefered style is not a specific school, though it shares many similarities with a variety of the asian martial arts. She was taught this style by a man known as 'Tiger', a wandering master of the art . Tiger visits ashville once every few months for a couple of days to ensure Anne is keeping up with her training and teach her new skills if she has mastered those he showed her last time. In the intervening period, Anne trains at the gym run by Perry, whose experience with fitness and fighting ensures she does not over-exert herself. Go back to top
Sanyiel D'Tyriona
Not that much is known about Sanyiel. He was, to all appearances, a little drunk after a night of drowning his sorrows when he accidentally slipped through a portal that spontaneously opened between the world he was on and the earth. He was subsequently attacked and left for dead by Ashville's thugs. He was found, half dead, by Gareth, Jack and Anne and taken in. Due to his ability to change his shape to a limited extent these three are the only ones who know the truth of his alien heritage. In his natural shape, Sanyiel looks like a large boy in his late teens, with grey skin, red eyes and winding white scars below the surface of his flesh all over his body. He also has wings, one feathered and the other like a bat's wing. In the form he has assumed to hide on earth he is smaller, with brown hair and grey eyes. The only distinctive part of his original form that remains are the scars, still faintly visible below his skin. Go back to top
Melanie Ramon
Melanie was Anne's best friend early in their childhoods. However, after an accident in which all but her parents assumed she died, Melanie was physically and mentally scarred almost beyond recognition and, after years of abuse eventually began to harbour a vendetta against humanity in general. She escaped from her parents care and began inflicting her own brand of justice on those she felt responsible for her situation. Melanie is not someone you'd want to meet down a dark alley. Well, actually, she's more like a person you wouldn't want to meet, period. Go back to top
Sebastian Lemancez
Sebastian is the self proclaimed lord of ashville highschool. Fiery, cruel and pitiless, he is the leader of the gang of bullies that rules the school in secret. Sebastian is by no means a fool, and is quite adept at sweet-talking the teachers into believing he is a saint, in fact, Sebastian is one of the school prefects, a position of power which he takes great delight in abusing. Sebastian has a particular grudge against Gareth and Jack for reasons as yet unknown. Go back to top
Jean-Pierre Israel (Perry)
Perry immigrated to ashville from france with the rest of his family. Something of a black sheep in a family of strict Jews, Perry takes fitness far more seriously than religion and founded the ashville gym. Anne met Perry soon after his gym opened and since then the two have become good friends. Anne is one of the most common customers at Ashville gym and in return Perry trains her with every inch of expertise and experience he possesses, though even he has difficulty in truly matching fists or feet with her. While Anne's martial arts know-how comes mainly from Tiger, it is Perry who ensures she keeps in shape without her over-zealousness causing her injury or illness. Go back to top
Dr. Damien Cooper
Jack's father, Damien, is a highly respected and extremely skillfull scientist who holds one of the key top ranking positions at Gencorp, a research and development company that has its practical headquarters in ashville. While seemingly pleasant enough, Damien is obsessed with his work and so rarely sees his son, often disappearing for days on end into his laboratory. Damien holds degrees in chemistry, biology, biochemistry and a PHD in Genetic chemistry. Go back to top
Jacob Smith
Jacob is Anne's younger brother. Having spent his entire life (or very close to it) in Ashville, he is more confident than even his older sister on the streets and has a cocky, self-assured nature that both comforts and scares Anne. Jacob was still a baby during the traumatic events in Anne's past, so he doesn't suffer the resulting trauma as much as she does. He loves his sister dearly and does his best to keep her spirits up in her occasional bouts of depression and, despite rarely succeeding, is probably the best at doing it. Jacob still attends Ashville primary school. Go back to top
Joel Blanche
The daughter of Perry's sister, Joel is another relative newcomer to Ashville. Due to her links with Perry, she has become firm friends with Anne, and views the older girl as somewhat of a mentor in both the classroom and the gym. While naturally inclined to be shy, Joel still has the matter-of-factness that all residents of Ashville inevitably acquire, and is surprisingly frank when it comes to standing up for her beliefs, which are groing more and more like her uncle's than her mother's. Dr Herbet Norman
Dr Norman, who prefers to be referenced without his title, is somewhat of an eccentric, to put things very, very mildly. He is currently teaching chemistry at Ashville high school. Norm enjoys everything to do with his subject and takes great joy in demonstrating the more spectacular effects of chemistry to his class, often with impressively destrucive results. Even after only a couple of days at the school he has gained a repuation almost as impressive as Jack's as far as setting things (and people) on fire is concerned... Go back to top
Mr Randal Ballard
Known as 'old walrus face' behind his back, Mr Ballard is Ashville High's maths teacher. Grumpy and hardbitten by nature, he dislikes most of his students, primarily because none of them can recite pi to fifty places. Other than Koops who, for some reason, he likes even less. While almost universally unpopular, Ballard's legendarily boring lectures are interspaced by periods where, as if some hidden gift for teaching surfaces on rare occasions, his classes suddenly grasp concepts they had no idea even existed the previous day, though this might be because of the elaborate threats Ballard hurls at them should they fail to do so... Mrs Nikita Teresa
Mrs Teresa is the principal of Ashville high. Her field was originally languages however her resilience and deep faith made her an obvious choice to run one of the most difficult schools in the country. Mrs Teresa is strict but rarely unfair and she truly wants the best for each and every one of her students, however even her resolve can be taxed by the antics of Gareth and Koops, not made any less taxing by the exaggerated reporting of Sebastian. Go back to top
Dr Kyle Ahaz
Dr Kyle teaches Philosphy and religion at Ashville high, though 'teaching' is not a very good description of his methodology. Mostly he just explains inexplicable ethical concepts like they are the most obvious thing in the world and gets increasingly frustrated and angry when his students do not grasp them instantaeneously (or disagree). Kyle's docorate was in ancient theology and his studies of the early bible have caused him to become quite paranoid about the end of the world, seeing signs of the apocalypse in the most improbable of places. Often seen running around yelling that the end is nigh. Go back to top
Miss Jessica Thompson
While not the most youthful of the teaching staff at Ashville High, Jessica Thompson definitely does her best to make that appear to be the case. Vivacious and at least reasonably in tune with the culture of her students, Jessica maintains herself as a firm favourite among the students of Ashville. However, she isn't all good, and can be snarky and impatient at times Go back to top
Mr Steven Weston
Steven Weston teaches Physics at Ashville High, a quick witted and sharp minded scientist. While he gives students who do well fair credit, he is equally willing to humiliate people who fail to stay up to his standards. His classes are inevitably complicated affairs and so are enjoyed by the academically minded and loathed by those who cannot grasp his teachings rapidly enough to avoid a humiliation (and often detention) by his tongue. Weston also has fairly tense relations with Dr Ahaz and Mrs Teresa, as he has a low view of religion and quite actively tries to disposess both of them of their beliefs Go back to top
